Shocker!
Usually my husband doesn't say much when I am grading Pod submissions. His usual comments are things like "Are you finished yet?" or "What's so funny?" as I am chuckling about something Chris wrote in the message as he submitted an assignment or Nancy's desire to watch Guys and Dolls.
This morning as I was reading through the submitted interpretations of quotes from Streetcar, I told him we MUST find this movie to watch, especially the Treat Williams/Ann Margret version which is still my favorite.
His response, "Uhhh...I never really liked that play."
WHAT?!?!?! How could he say that? Whenever I taught Streetcar to my juniors over the years, I was always yelling "STELLA" up the stairs, asking my husband if he wanted me to demonstrate how Stanley cleared the table, or would smile and say "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." I even suggested hanging paper lanterns over the light on the ceiling fan in the sunroom (vetoed, as was the demonstration of Stanley clearing the table). He always tolerated my little dramatic references, but never once did he say "I never really liked that play."
I am stunned. I am disappointed. I must change his mind.
I MUST find a copy of that movie!!!! On a mission now......
I didn't get a chance to watch the movie, but I enjoyed reading the play. I think Williams way of Building up Blanche's hoity toity character, then slowly breaking it apart for the illusion that it really was is a good way to keep someone interested. I would really like to see this play in a theater. I am going to keep my eyes open for that and maybe catch the movie this summer when my life is not so chaotic!
ReplyDeleteI was asking my Mom to help me with understanding a term to help me with the play we were reading and when I told her the title of it, my Mom went "STELLA!!!!" That made me laugh so much.
ReplyDeleteThis post made me giggle! My husband has no interest in reading, but when I told him I was reading "Streetcar," he immediately yelled, "STELLA!" He was also upset with me when I decided to watch the movie as well, and he wasn't home to watch it with me. I was shocked! Haha.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can tell, you can find the VHS version of the movie fairly cheap on Ebay or Amazon. The next thing you can do to keep up with the times is to print the VHS to DVD. Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart do it for family videos, but I don't know how that would compute with the copyright acts. If you have a tech friend they might be able to do it for you so you could have the movie. Or garage sales are always selling VHS players. :)
